Dixie Dream House

Lubbock is really behind the rest of the world in most sustainability areas. It's somewhat paradoxical since Lubbock is also in one of the most resource vulnerable areas. Without underground water, a non-renewable resource, the Lubbock economy and way of life would cease to exist. One of the common sustainability features of a civilized city is green waste collection. Green waste, organic materials that can be composted, should be sperated from the conventional (landfill) waste stream and eventually reused as soil, but Lubbock treats green waste (and electronics, glass, tin, aluminum, paper, etc.) as landfill waste. Since I moved here, I refused to put green waste in the landfill and I began putting lawn clippings, sticks and pulled weeds into this pile. After 3 years, the pile has grown into this enormous fire hazard, but Dixie has put it to good use. Dixie has dug out the center section and created a tunnel into the pile. Now, the cavern is large enough for me to climb inside to possibly enjoy a pot of rootleaf.
