Padre Birds

Cold Hands

The energy at Spring Break South Padre is palpable. I woke up just before dawn even after closing down the bars last night fueled by some fortuitous cocktail of surging hormones, alcohol, and the strung out, wired feeling from driving 12 hours in one go.

My pre-dawn excursion down the beach and to the bird sanctuary was extremely prosperous. I must have seen 50 species or more, but the weather did not cooperate for taking photographs and the sun came out only for about 20 minutes. This shot of a black-necked stilt was taken from a blind during those few moments of cloud-free sunrise.
