Instinctual Fear
I have been saying man is an instinctual animal for many years and I'm always on the lookout for more and more evidence.
A couple weekends back, Sarah and I went to Brazos Bend State Park, which is known for alligators. I had been there before
for some canoeing and I have been to alligator parks elsewhere, but I had never been face to face with 6-8 foot wild and free
alligators.
Obviously a picture cannot evoke instinct; I only put this here as documentation that it really happened. When you are
unknowingly walking within a few feet of a mouth bigger than your whole head, it's mighty scary. The weird thing is that
our gator bait (aka the puppers) never even knew it was there. Our mammal senses render us useless to detect the looming
silent death. I've read some people feel this way around spiders and snakes, but those have never bothered me. Now a
massive gator, that looks like something that can kill me and I'd never even see it coming.
